Candlemas marks the turning point from the season and story of Christmas on our journey towards Easter. Here we commemorate the presentation of the infant Jesus to God in the Temple at Jerusalem, where he was met and recognised as the Christ by Anna and Simeon.
We read in Luke 2.22-38 that Simeon held Jesus and called him ‘a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel’. In some traditions, in connection to this, the candles used in church are blessed at this time, and people bring their own candles to be blessed as they remember Christ ‘the light of the world’ in their own homes.
You might like to have a candle ready to light as you join us for this week’s service—we will be using them in our prayers together.
